UFC 220 – Preview

UFC 220 on January 20th the UFC returns to the Boston with the first PPV show of 2018 headlined by the heavyweight title fight between Stipe Miocic & contender Francis Ngannou possibly the most anticipated heavyweight clash in recent memory aslo the co-main event Light-Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier takes on Volkan Oezdemir.UK standout Arnold Allen was due to fight on this card but was pulled due to visa issues also Kamaru Usman & Emil Meek was supposed to take place on this event but because of visa trouble the bout took place at UFN Stephens vs Choi.

The Heavyweight Title clash – Stipe Miocic looks to make history and defend his UFC heavyweight title for the thrid time breaking the UFC record for heavyweight title defences which is crazy considering heavyweight was the first division in the UFC.Stipe’s title reign includes defences against Alistair Overeem & Junior Dos Santos both by knockout in the very first round infact his last four fights have all ended by knockout inside the first round Miocic has showed excellent boxing and his ability to hold a pace he showed against Mark Hunt in his 5th round TKO victory and also in his decision loss to Dos Santos in their first fight back in 2014.Now to talk about the challenger Francis Ngannou a vicious heavy handed knockout artist who has risen to the top of the division very fast knocking out Andrei Arlovski and even more impressively Alistair Overeem he knocked out with a lead hand uppercut almost even a shovel hook and sent Overeems head into orbit that clip will forever be on UFC highlight reels but we dont know all that much about Francis he has only been training MMA for five years but he is 6-0 in the UFC with 5 knockouts and one submission he really has a Mike Tyson feel about him when he is fighting and going from being homeless to one of the top UFC heavyweight contenders in the world right now and in such a short period of time. This saturday we are going to find out exactly how good Francis Ngannou is and if he can stop Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic from making UFC history.

The return of DC – at UFC 214 Daniel Cormier would attempt to defend his title and avenge his only professional loss against Jon Jones the former who never lost the title in the octagon and after two back and fourth rounds Cormier would eventually lose 3 minutes into the 3rd round after eating a left high kick and some vicious ground and pound Jon Jones was once again UFC Light heavyweight champion of the world…but once again Jon Jones would lose his title outside of the octagon when he failed his post fight USADA drug test the decision was overturned & Daniel Cormier was reinstated as champion. So what does mean for the Light Heavyweight division ? AAlexander Gustafsson having shoulder surgery,Anthony Johnson being half retired half moving to heavyweight the path was clear for Volkan Oezdemir who entered the UFC on short notice to take on OSP where we picked up a split decision win before knocking out highly touted prospect Misha Cirkunov & long time top 10 fighter Jimi Manuwa both inside 60 seconds to ear himslef a UFC title shot against DC.Its no secret that DC is going to want to tie Volken up and put him on his back and beat him up from top posistion but at the same time Volken is going to try and put heavy hands on DC and try and put him away with strikes.

About Us

MMA in Newcastle Upon Tyne and the North East generally has grown massively over the last few years and coupled with its boxing heritage it’s truly astounding that the regions capitol city has been without a dedicated Martial Arts and Boxing store for so long. Newcastle was without an MMA store until 2011 when FIGHT STORE Newcastle opened. Since Then we have been a part of the community with the staff and owners all having been involved for many years in the sports we work for. The MMAnewcastle website was originally built purely because of the amount of inquires we received daily about where people could train. We offer our directory and events listing free to the North East Martial Arts and Boxing community and will continue to work to promote the sports we love in our region
